Manufacture of Synthesis Gas
PPE offers plants designed to produce synthesis gas in all capacities and purities.
PPE designed and fabricated synthesis plants are based on Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) or Partial
Oxidation (POX) to reform natural gas into synthesis gas of the quality required by the application.
Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide plants are actually synthesis gas plants designed to produce synthesis
gas in the appropriate CO to H2 ratios.
Hydrogen Plants are generally based on Steam Methane Reforming and run at a high H2
to CO ratio, commonly 3H2:1CO. The synthesis gas is then treated utilizing Pressure Swing Absorption
(PSA) or Permeable Membranes to produce H2 at the required purity.
Carbon Monoxide plants are based on either Steam Methane Reforming or Partial Oxidation.
It is important to understand the required CO to H2 ratio before choosing which process to use for your applicaiton.
SMR's generally operate at 3H2:1CO ratio and POX's operate at 2H2:1CO. Depending on the process chosen, the
synthesis gas is then treated utilizing Coldbox technology or Permeable Membranes resulting in CO at the required purity.
